What do you want? It’s a question someone asked me on the countdown to new years eve this year. I stared at them and shrugged. “Chicken nuggets.” Always, of course.
But to be honest it stuck. What do I want? We’re one month into 2017 and I’m getting bored of the gym I keep pretending to be too busy for. Each year we’re faced with resolutions – i.e. what we want out of every year. And it’s a good question to ask: how do you make the most of it? It’s a good thing to do things with purpose and to know why you’re doing them because the longer you do the things that make you unhappy, well, the longer you’re unhappy. I often have to force myself to live in the moment. I tend to countdown to things I want. But recently, I’ve learned that some of the things you want most there is no countdown, you just have to wait. Whether it’s fixing something, working on something or just something to spark an idea.
All around the world, there are wonderful groups of women coming together to do a women’s march – something that 100 years ago was barely an idea. It provides hope and strength to women and girls from communities near and far, confirming the strength and grace of all different types. For many, it marked a day to count down to. Equality was a day to count down to. We are finally in an era where we celebrate the efforts of and recognize the power of women. It symbolizes no matter who may kick you down, or grab you by the pussy, those who stand tall are better and more beautiful than ever.
So rather than counting down, here’s to the first day of counting up.
